GYC Overview

Deborah at Lady LakesEstablished in 1994, our organization is a not-for-profit, regionally based chorus for boys and girls aged 8-18 that has become an international children's touring choir. The Gainesville Youth Chorus is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the natural qualities of the unchanged voice. GYC has a training choir and two principle performing groups; the Prelude Choir, Concertina Choir and the Concert Choir. The Touring Choir is selected as travel opportunities arise.

A much sought after choir, the Gainesville Youth Chorus performs 8-10 free concerts annually in Gainesville and the surrounding areas, as well as invitational performances with the University of Florida Symphony Orchestra and Choirs, benefit performances for Stop! Children's Cancer and other community and regional events. GYC's international cultural exchange program, "Joining Voices across the Sea," has included performances in Italy, Ireland, UK, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic as well as hosting visiting choirs from abroad. Performances of note include the Vatican, Vienna Konzerthaus, St. Patrick's Cathedral (Dublin), Charles Church (Vienna) and St. Nicholas Church (Prague).

GYC at Disney GYC has performed with the American Boy Choir, the Vienna Boy Choir, the Heart of the Valley Choirs (Oregon, USA), the Mennonite Children's Choir (Canada), the Singgemeinschaft Hammersbach and Kindertrachtengruppe Funtenseer (Germany) and the Southend Girls' and Boys' Choirs (Essex, UK). Additional performances include the Ramada International Child Reach Awards Ceremony, the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, the Florida Music Educators' State Conference in Tampa, Florida, the Village at Lady Lake, Florida and concerts at local retirement communities.

Concertina ChoirGYC has a highly credentialed, volunteer-based staff and parent organization. Our Board of Directors is comprised of active professional and musical members of our community, who support our mission and encourage local and corporate support. Member tuition provides a base for our operating costs, with additional support from the State of Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, The Florida Arts Council, and National Endowment for the Arts, City of Gainesville's Department of Cultural Affairs, individual donors, grants, foundation support and local corporate donations. GYC admits members without regard to race, color, creed or financial circumstances. A scholarship program is maintained to ensure that financial aid is available to families who qualify.
